International Women and Girls in Science Day

Awanui proudly supports International Women and Girls in Science Day 2026 recognising the contribution, expertise, and leadership of women scientists in our human and veterinary labs across our organisation.

Across Aotearoa, Awanui is a significant employer of women in science including pathologists, medical laboratory scientists and technicians who make up a team responsible for over 75% of all medical decisions and 100% of all cancer diagnoses in this country.

Every day, they play an important role in delivering the highest standard of diagnostic laboratory service and ensuring the highest quality care for patients, animals, and their families.

As New Zealand’s leading pathology provider, Awanui provides a range of career pathways which represents the importance of increasing equality, opportunity, and representation for women in science.

We do this though learning and training, professional development, and leadership opportunities for both current and new staff enabling them to build rewarding, long-term careers.

Today we say thank you to all our women in science for their commitment to excellence, patient outcomes, improving how we work and building a strong, inclusive organisation.

“If I had to sum up my leadership approach in one word, it would be fairness. Lead by example, treating people with respect, and supporting growth creates a culture where everyone feels valued” – Shona Brougham – Head of Department of the Core Laboratory at Awanui Labs Nelson

“For anyone at Awanui considering a leadership role, my advice is stay open to opportunities, learn from the leaders around you, and trust you often grow into leadership by taking that first step rather than waiting until you feel completely ready” – Rebecca Brosnan – Regional Manager South Island

“For me now, trusting and empowering your own leadership lets them make decisions, generate ideas, and shape how their teams work,” – Natasha Dutt – Head of Department – Biochemistry and Immunology (Auckland lab)
